RUMMAGE

WIESENSCHWEIN PIGS CAN RUMMAGE IN DIFFERENT SUBSTRATES WHENEVER THEY FEEL LIKE IT. THEY EVEN FIND FOOD WHILE DOING SO: OUTSIDE BETWEEN THE TREES OR IN THE PLAYGROUND.

Thus, Wiesenschwein pigs are constantly seen rummaging: in the permanent rooting area, to which they have access at any time. In the covered all-weather playground and in the pasture, between the trees in a specially designed rummaging area with earth substrates, a “forest floor”. The stamina with which the pigs dig through the soft soil every day is impressive.

SWIM & WALLOW

THE POOL IS DEEP ENOUGH THAT THEY CAN REALLY SWIM IN IT. SOME START RIGHT AWAY, OTHERS WATCH FIRST.

The wallow serves as a welcome cooling place for the Wiesenschwein pigs. However, it takes a certain temperature for a pig to dip its belly into the cool water – not much different from us humans.

CURIOSITY

PIGS ARE VERY CURIOUS AND PLAYFUL. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR YOUNG ANIMALS – THUS FOR OUR WIESENSCHWEIN PIGS.

Traditional livestock systems offer hardly any variety to the pigs, nor any opportunities to pursue their pronounced curiosity. A bit of straw and a small, concrete all-weather run are the maximum.
Wiesenschwein pigs, on the other hand, enjoy their lives. Due to the staggered access to the free-range areas, they have a varied daily routine, and they are constantly discovering new things. In addition, Wiesenschwein pigs have toys and various feed components that provide variety and employment.

THE MEADOW AND THE FOREST

THERE IS THE BIG MEADOW. HERE THE WIESENSCHWEIN PIGS CAN RUN AROUND AND EAT GRASS. EVEN MORE, UNDER THE SHADY TREES THEY LOOK FOR CORN CUBES. THEY CAN LIVE OUT THEIR NEED TO DIG AND SEARCH FOR FOOD. THE CORN CUBES ARE ALWAYS AUTOMATICALLY BEDDED IN.

In this large area, the Wiesenschwein pigs have enough space to move around, to really let off steam. Part of the area is planted with trees. This provides nice shade in the summer and protects the pigs’ sensitive skin from the sun.

In the diversion area, the pigs can dig and burrow. Corn cubes are automatically scattered here, which the pigs like to search for. Access to the meadow is only possible in relatively dry conditions or when there is a lot of snow – similar to cow pastures.

An example: For a group of 40 animals, each weighing more than 60 kilograms, the area of forest and meadow is 350 m2. This corresponds to an additional space of about six times the total area of the barn and balcony.

THE NEEDS

YES, PIGS SHOULD BE ABLE TO LIVE OUT THEIR INSTINCTS PROPERLY. THE WIESENSCHWEIN SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED TO MEET THEIR NEEDS.

Pigs sleep and rest a lot. Afterwards and in between, they have distinct, active needs. In normal pig farming systems, they cannot live out these needs, or only to a limited extent – very boring for the pigs, indeed sad.
Especially young pigs, and all fattening pigs are young pigs, are extremely interested in their environment, downright curious and brash. And they like to dig in the ground, they play, move intensively, run for pure joy, wallow.
That is why the Wiesenschwein pig system offers the pigs an extremely varied daily routine, an attractive habitat to live out their needs and species-appropriate feeding. In addition to feeding at the trough, they can also forage for themselves – in the burrowing substrate in the “forest floor” or they simply eat grass in the meadow. Yes, this is variety.

THE LIVING SPACE

WIESENSCHWEIN PIGS HAVE FOUR AREAS TO LIVE OUT THEIR NEEDS: THE BARN, THE BALCONY, THE PLAYGROUNDAND and THE LARGE MEADOW.

The habitat of the Wiesenschwein pigs is designed in such a way that, in addition to the need to sleep and rest, they can also well satisfy their distinctly active needs: for example rooting, playing, moving and wallowing.

The pigs have enough space to act out their natural behavior, with minimal consumption of the scarce resource “floor”. This is possible thanks to a staggered use of the playground and meadow.

EVERYTHING AT ITS TIME

CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY SUCH AS RFID-UHF, CAMERAS/IMAGE ALGORITHMS, TABLETS AND SPECIALLY DEVELOPED LIFT GATES ALLOW MULTIPLE GROUPS OF WIESENSCHWEIN PIGS TO USE A SINGLE HABITAT, SMART AND FULL OF JOY.

Wiesenschwein pigs have the opportunity to explore a diverse environment and use it regularly. Resource-efficient and space-saving, Wiesenschwein pigs share this environment. This is possible by taking advantage of the pigs’ natural daily rhythm:
Pigs spend a large part of the day sleeping. Or they lie down and rest. They don’t need much space for this. Outside of this phase, they occupy themselves with rooting, they maintain social contacts and take care of their toilet. Wiesenschwein pigs can pursue these needs at any time. On the one hand in the barn, on the other hand on the associated balcony, which is accessible to the pigs at any time.

The pigs are grouped by age. Each group has two large free-range levels at its disposal, time-limited and automatically controlled: a covered all-weather area with an earth-like rooting substrate and a wallow or even swimming wallow (free-run level 1). When the weather is suitable, a second, larger area with a meadow and trees is added (free-run level 2). In these free-run levels they can really let off steam before returning to their barn with balcony to eat and sleep. This is possible thanks to the sophisticated Wiesenschwein automation system, which uses the pigs’ natural daily rhythm and intelligence.

Depending on the number of groups, there are several playgrounds and pastures that are operated in parallel. This guarantees sufficient free-running time even in large farms.

For free running, the gate between the balcony, i.e. the permanent run, and the playground (free running level 1) is automatically opened for a group of pigs. The pigs jump outside and play, rooting and running. When the weather or the humidity of the pasture allows it, the second gate between the playground and the meadow and forest (free run level 2) opens. The animals now have the entire area at their free disposal.

The scanners at the gates constantly measure which animal is where. As soon as the free run time is over, a certain tone sequence is heard. The group is conditioned to this tone sequence and the Wiesenschwein pigs run back independently. As soon as the control system receives the information that all animals are back in the barn, the gates close automatically. This is possible thanks to image algorithms and scanners

The lifting gate to freewheel level 1 opens automatically.

The group that has been conditioned to the tone sequence goes back into the stable independently.

Each group is conditioned to a sequence of tones. When it sounds, the pigs run back into the barn on their own. Yes, there is food.

THE WIESENSCHWEIN SYSTEM

YES, WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR FARM ANIMALS. WIESENSCHWEIN PIGS CAN FULLY LIVE OUT ALL THEIR INSTINCTS. EVEN MORE: WIESENSCHWEIN PIG FARMING ALLOWS THEM TO ACTUALLY FOLLOW THEIR PREFERENCES AND NEEDS. THEY SHAR THE HABITAT THEY NEED TO DO SO – IN A RESOURCE-EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY WAY.

The Wiesenschwein pig system is a completely new concept: neither in Switzerland nor in other countries have animals been kept in this way before. The Wiesenschwein facilities are built in such a way that the pigs can use different free-range areas in a staggered manner, fully automated thanks to the application of state-of-the-art technologies and sophisticated logics.
The innate intelligence of pigs, combined with this system, makes it possible for the first time for farm pigs to fully live out all their needs. Much more than that, the time restriction makes the options much more attractive and varied for the pigs, which visibly pleases the animals. For the first time, a comprehensively exciting and attractive pig life is possible, while at the same time conserving resources and reducing emissions.
In this way, the developers want to fulfill their commitment to the life of each individual farm animal comprehensively and conclusively, without any ifs and buts.
This deep understanding of the pigs and many years of observation made it possible for the development team to invent this kind of lifestock farming in the first place and to continuously improve it for the future. Fair to the animal – good for the farmers – wonderful for the consumers.

MOVE

WIESENSCHWEIN PIGS HAVE REGULAR ACCESS TO LARGE AREAS OFFERING SUFFICIENT SPACE FOR CAPERS AND STUNTS.

Once they arrive in their covered playground or in the meadow, the pigs really get going: they run across the place, from one corner to the other. The area is large enough for sprints and all kinds of capers, and the soft ground allows for quick acceleration and abrupt braking. The Wiesenschwein pigs live out their urge to move here, romping around exuberantly. The automation makes it possible that pigs alternately use the same spacious areas without the farmer having to take care of it. At the end of the free-range period, a group-specific tone sounds. The pigs know it’s feeding time, they run inside, the camera surveillance monitors, and the gates close automatically. After that, everything is free again for the next group.
